Cruelty free Makeup brands sold in Boots

Wednesday 24 August 2016

These are a list of all of the makeup brands in Boots and what their policies are on animal testing and if they are vegan or not! Some of them are cruelty free but sell in China, some don't and some do just test on animals. Hopefully this list will make things a lot easier when it comes to drugstore makeup shopping in the UK for some people!

Quick reminder: The leaping bunny logo (below) certifies that the product has been named 'cruelty free' under the
internationally recognised Humane Cosmetics/Humane Household Products Standards and means that the product has not been tested on animals in the UK or anywhere else in the world (including sales in China).

In my point of view; If a company truly doesn't believe in animal testing then regardless of profit or any other element then it should not sell to China. China have a law in their country that no products are allowed to be sold there unless they are tested on animals, however Chinese citizens can purchase from online sites which sell makeup which has not been tested on animals. Just because a product hasn't been tested on an animal does not mean that its not safe. There are many ways now for humans to check if a product is safe other than using an animal to do so- one of these methods being testing products on human skin donated from plastic surgery.

KEY:
VEGAN. - all products are 100% vegan.
VEGAN OPTIONS AVAILABLE. - not all of the products are vegan but there are a few.
CRUELTY FREE. - this company is cruelty free but they sell in China, and they will test on animals when required by law and they maybe owned by a company that does test on animals.
100% CRUELTY FREE. - this company is cruelty free and does NOT sell in China.

Benefit: Benefit are on PETA'S list of companies that DO test on animals. On their website, in their FAQ's they explain about their testing methods and say that they don't test their products on animals, however they cannot guarantee that their suppliers, who they purchase ingredients do not test on animals. They do state that "Benefit is against cruelty to animals. " however they cannot 100% guarantee that the whole product is completely made from cruelty free ingredients which haven't been tested on animals.

Maybelline: Maybelline is owned by L'Oreal who are on PETA's list of companies that DO test on animals.

No7: No7 isn't listed on neither PETA or Leaping Bunny for being a cruelty free brand, however Catherine from buyingcrueltyfree contacted boots to ask them about their policy, as boots own No7. They claim to not test their finished products or their ingredients on animals and said they do not ask other companies to test on animals for them and they also said that they are going to try and get on the Leaping Bunny list. But they didn't answer the question of whether they sell their products in China, which was also found by Catherine that they sell their medicine there but not sure about their makeup. I personally wouldn't trust this brand until they are registered on either PETA or Leaping Bunny.

NYX: CRUELTY FREE. NYX are on PETA's list of brands that do not conduct tests on animals. Recently in the year PETA posted saying  "We’re now happy to announce that NYX has confirmed its dedication to its cruelty-free policy and will remain 100 percent cruelty-free under L’Oréal’s ownership. This means that NYX does not and will not allow, conduct, commission, or pay for tests on animals for its ingredients, formulations, or finished products anywhere in the world. No animals will suffer for NYX products" and also claimed that they are 100% cruelty free. HOWEVER, this company is owned by L'Oreal, who conduct tests on animals because they sell in china, but NYX themselves do not sell their products in China. I would class them being cruelty free, however not 100% as they are still owned by L'Oreal.

Rimmel London: Although on Rimmels animal testing section on their website they dot around the question of actually testing on animals. They do actually test on animals which has been found here. They sell their products in China and any company that sells in China will test on animals, as Chinese authorities only accept products which have been tested on animals. Rimmel are owned by a company called Coty who sell brands in China and test on animals.

Smashbox Cosmetics: CRUELTY FREE.  Smashbox is listed on PETA's list of brands which don't test on animals AND they don't sell in china. In their FAQ's they claim they "do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor ask others to test on our behalf, except when required by law.
Smashbox is committed to the elimination of animal testing. We are equally committed to consumer health and safety, and bringing to market products that comply with applicable regulations in every country in which our products are sold." However they are owned by Estee Lauder who are confirmed to do tests on animals by PETA. Estee Lauder also own other companies who test on animals like; MAC, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Bumble and Bumble, Jo Malone, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford, to name a few. Smash box in my opinion isn't 100% cruelty free because who their owners are and also the fact they will test on animals when required by law.

Soap & Glory: CRUELTY FREE. VEGAN OPTIONS AVAILABLE.  Soap & Glory are not registered as a brand on both Leaping Bunny or PETA, that do or don't test on animals. However their FAQ section states that they do not conduct tests on animals at all, claiming that they have very strict guidelines with this topic. But because they aren't listed on either of the websites I do not believe they are 100% cruelty free.

Boots don't have as many cruelty free brands available as other places such as Superdrug, which is why I like to shop in Superdrug more. Animal testing methods are unnecessary as some of these brands have proved!
